Creators is a nonprofit dedicated to building and renewing lives one home at a time. We imagine a world where no one ever has to choose between shelter and survival. We build, renovate and repair houses in rural Jamaica using volunteer labor and donations. We welcome all people to work with us in partnership.
As our Founder likes to say, Creators of Hope is not a handout program. Partner families are carefully screened in the application program, as willing to participate in improving their situation and be responsible for ongoing improvements. Creators’ homeowners sometimes even invest hours of their own labor, working alongside volunteers.
Does Creators of Hope only focus on building new houses?
No, Creators works in a number of different ways to create clean, dry, stable housing. In addition to new construction, Creators of Hope also renovates existing buildings, such as adding a room or replacing a roof.
Where does Creators of Hope operate?
At this time, we are building exclusively in rural Jamaica, but our vision is to expand our reach worldwide. Our headquarters are located in Cuba City, Wisconsin, USA.
How are donations distributed and used?
We rely on gifts from individuals, corporations and other groupsto fund our house-building mission. All donations of any amount are deeply appreciated and help us build more stable, affordable houses for more families. Currently, volunteers fund their own travel to Jamaica (we like to call this “tuition” for the education they’re receiving).
How are our homeowner families chosen?
Families in need of affordable, stable shelter apply with Father Baylon in Porus. Creators of Hope homeowners are chosen based on three criteria:
The family’s level of need.
Their demonstration of a sense of personal responsibility and motivation—essentially, their willingness to meet us halfway.
Their willingness to become partners in ongoing local education and entrepreneurship programs.
Religion is not a factor in choosing Creators of Hope’s home recipients.
Can I donate materials?
We are deeply appreciative of any donation offer, but the wrinkle in accepting material donations is getting them to Jamaica. If, however, you or your company has the capacity to donate materials and ship them to the next building site, let’s talk!
Otherwise, we are in greater need and better equipped to gratefully receive your monetary donations.
Who controls and manages Creators of Hope?
A US-based board of directors who are deeply passionate about helping those less fortunate get the hand up they need to restore their hope, and continue improving their lives.
